NEW BRUNSWICK - A crime alert issued by Rutgers police about an armed robbery on Tuesday April 10 has turned out to be false.
Upon further investigation, police said the alleged incident in front of the Campbell Hall dorm on George Street did not happen as was initially reported. Police had said initially that the suspect showed a handgun, ordered the suspect into his car (with two young children in the back seat) and took the victim to the PNC Bank on Somerset Street to withdraw money.
That is apparently not the case.
Rutgers police sent out an update to the crime alert Wednesday at 4:40 p.m. stating that the “amended account of the incident was described as a consensual interaction between the victim and the unknown male. The interaction did not include the observation of a weapon and ultimately resulted in a theft by deception.”
The perpetrator is still being described as a Middle Eastern male, approximately 40 years of age, having a full black beard, short black hair, and wearing a short sleeved t-shirt with khaki pants. The perpetrator was accompanied by a female wearing a purple dress and head covering as well as two girls, approximately three to four years old years old.
The crime was reported to have happened at 12:30 p.m. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with many questions left unanswered.
