The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School in New Providence proudly announces that its First Lego League "FLL" Robotics team was awarded the prestigious Teamwork Award at the Montclair Robotics Tournament. FLL Robotics is a global robotics competition wherein each team must research and solve a current, real-world issue. This year, the challenge was transportation related. The Academy's "Panther Power" team created an innovative solution to helicopter safety issues by devising an ultrasonic proximity sensor to help prevent collisions. The Panther Power team also assembled and programmed its Mindstorm robot using complex software.
At the Montclair Qualifying Robotics Tournament on December 4th, Panther Power competed against many teams from the region. They presented their research and solutions to a panel of judges, who questioned them about their research process, solution and teamwork. The Panther Power team also competed in the "pits" where its robot diligently accomplished its required tasks, earning the team's highest score ever. Many fellow Academy students and families cheered on the Panther Power team, in a show of school unity and spirit.
The Panther Power team won the Teamwork Award which recognizes exceptional partnership, strong problem solving skills and great group dynamics. They were also among the top teams to qualify for the NJ State Championships on December 12th, where Panther Power again earned strong scores and high praise from the judges. Having also won the Project Award in 2008, its rookie year, the Panther Power team is proud of its accomplishments and is looking forward to next year's competition which will focus on the biomedical industry.
