WESTFIELD, NJ — The weather was appropriately gloomy for the AddamsFest Fun Zone in Downtown Westfield Sunday.

Conditions were overcast and rainy; however, organizers had prepared, with tents under which the Maniac Pumpkin Carvers expertly scrawled designs into the sides of pumpkins while performers regaled audiences on Quimby Street.

“It’s a little damp,” said Westfield’s Marty Silverman, who was dressed in full garb — including with a costume belly — as the Addams Family character Uncle Fester. “It’s just our kind of weather.”

Silverman had ducked into The Salad House with his fellow Westfield residents dressed as Addams Family characters. The characters spent much of the afternoon taking photos with the public while rock artists from the Valencia School of Music played contemporary tunes.

Windows around the downtown were elaborately painted for the festivities, including a replica of a Charles Addams work on the front of the now-shuttered Castle Bootery. The sign’s “t” was missing, causing it to read “Castle Boo ery.”

Scheduled for the afternoon was a Howl-o-ween Dog Contest of costumes. With the wet weather, it was anticipated the pooches would pack into Woof Gang Bakery, organizers said.

More AddamsFest festivities are planned and ongoing, including the second annual Haunt Your House competition. Click here (and see below) for the full home decorating contest details and map of the homes.
