NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Alicia Gregorio, the New Providence Middle School Teacher of the Year, received the Golden Apple award from Superintendent of Schools David Miceli at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 30.
Middle School Principal Jay Richter introduced Gregorio, who has been a teacher in Middle School for 24 years, saying "she combines her knowledge and passion for history with her creativity in teaching to challenge students each and every day." Not only is she organized, she is innovative and "willing to try new teaching techniques and new technologies," he said.
Gregorio is involved in and out of the classroom. She is advisor to the Sunshine Club, "provides support to her co-workers when they are in need," by organizing meals and gift cards if needed, and takes part in school service projects. She even "dressed up as a Heart for the American Heart Association fundraiser last year," he told the crowd, as Gregorio laughed at the memory.
She is also a track and field coach and, what many may not know is that Richter's wife, "ran track here at New Providence High School with Mrs. Gregorio as her coach," he told the crowd.
Gregorio and her husband Rick "have traveled the state and county for every wrestling and cheer competition imaginable," Richter said. As for her family, she talks with pride about her daughter Maeve, a freshman in high school, and her son Kyle, who is in the Marines.
He concluded by saying, "she displays leadership, empathy, friendliness and caring. Her students are fortunate to work with her and her colleagues are lucky, too."
