NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- Chris Kubas collected three hits and drove in four runs to lift New Providence to a 12-1 baseball victory over Belvidere in the first round of the Section 2, Group 1 state tournament on Monday.

Nate Scott pitched a five-inning two-hitter and went 3-for-4 for New Providence (10-12-1), which scored five runs in the first inning, one run in the second and then six runs in the third inning. Scott struck out nine batters and walked two.

In the first inning, Anthony Iannacone led off by getting hit by a pitch before Scott singled. Stanton Leuthner followed with a two-run triple o deep left field, and he scored on Kubas' single, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead before Belvidere had registered an out.

Ryan Sherman and Thomas Friscia each had two RBI for New Providence. Kubas and Jeff Policarpio each had a double.
