NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - New Providence boys basketball turned up the heat as the Pioneers put up a season-high 79 points in the 79-42 win over Roselle Park on Tuesday evening at home.
With this win, the Pioneers improve to 2-1 in conference play and 2-6 overall.
“We have been struggling lately, losing three or four in a row,” said New Providence head coach Art Cattano. Their most recent loss was to cross-town rival Gov. Livingston in a low scoring back and forth defensive battle.
Each game his team comes out to play hard and Cattano knew his team’s offense would sync and shots would eventually start to fall in.
On Tuesday, his offense clicked with four players reaching double digits. Kevin Vass led with 16 points, Will Faucher with 14, Jack Barletta added 12 and Mike Barletta with 10.
New Providence was up by 12 at half and maintained a growing lead throughout the second half, never losing control. With multiple players hitting, the Pioneers nearly doubled their lead, 63-32, going into the fourth.
The energy escalated in the second half as Faucher and Brett Caminiti each sank three consecutive threes. "We shot the ball well tonight," said Cattano. "A bunch of kids were hitting it tonight, which was great."
The rotation of players allowed every member of the team to receive playing time and contribute to the victory. “It’s always good to play everybody,” said Cattano, adding, “the kids all work hard, so it was nice to get everyone out there.”
Next, New Providence will play Arthur L. Johnson in Clark on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
