CLARK, NJ – Westfield’s Jake Wornow scored three times to lead the Blue Devils past New Providence, 9-5, in a Union County Boys Lacrosse Tournament semifinal on Thursday at Arthur L. Johnson High School.
Wornow was one of three Westfield players to score multiple goals, leading the trio that included Mike Moriarty and Blake Taylor, who both scored twice.
John Slater led New Providence with two goals.
The Pioneers led 2-1 in the first quarter, but were outscored 8-3 throughout the rest of the game.
Westfield ended any chance at a New Providence comeback when the team scored five times in the fourth quarter.
Nick Bond and Brandon Leuthold both added goals for Westfield. In addition to Slater’s pair, Johnny Shahpazian, Quinn Killeen and Tyler Lawton scored for the Pioneers.
The victory sends No. 2 Westfield into the Union County championship game on Saturday where they will face No. 1 Summit.
New Providence has appeared in four straight county semifinals, but have not been able to clinch a berth in the finals.
Faceoff for Saturday’s Union County title game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Arthur L. Johnson High School.
