CLARK, NJ – For the second straight year, the New Providence and Summit boys’ lacrosse teams met in the Union County Tournament semifinals. And, for the second straight year, the Hilltoppers dominated the game from start to finish, defeating the Pioneers, 12-4, on Wednesday.
John Cordrey led the way for Summit with four goals and three assists, as six different Hillstoppers scored in the game.
Summit led the entire way, with Cordrey, Jack Johnson and Chris Zanelli opening up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter.
After New Providence’s Jack Harvey scored in the closing seconds to cut the Pioneer deficit to three, Summit’s Corey McManus sparked another four-goal run in the second period to essentially put the game away.
The Hilltoppers led by as many as nine goals in the game, all in support of goalkeeper Jay Winchell, who made seven saves for Summit.
Aside from Cordrey’s four goals, Zanelli, McManus and Evan Kulpan each scored twice, while Johnson and Andrew Chases found the twine once.
Harvey’s two goals led the Pioneers attack, while Jake Palmieri and Quinn Killeen each scored once.
The victory pushes Summit into a rematch with Westfield in the Union County final on Saturday.
