SPRINGFIELD, NJ – It took more than 90 minutes for New Providence and David Brearley’s boys’ soccer squads to break the match’s scoreless tie.
However, in the game’s 98th minute, senior Wisanu Risser scored the biggest goal of his Pioneers’ career, beating Brearley 1-0 and sending New Providence into next week’s section semifinal.
Risser’s sixth goal of the season was off a feed from sophomore Johnny Kovacs, securing the Pioneers’ second straight shutout to open the state tournament.
Freshman goalkeeper Dillon Konzelmann stopped all five shots he faced to win his eighth match of the season.
The Pioneers visit No. 1 Harrison on Monday, where the winner will play for the North Jersey 2, Group 1 title later in the week.
