NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Thursday’s boys’ soccer match between the Pioneers and Roselle was all but over just minutes in, as four goals tallied by the home side within the opening five minutes led to a 6-0 New Providence victory at Lieder Field.

“I was telling our team before the game that we need to jump on them and get off to a really strong start,” New Providence head coach Jon Panella said.  “I’m happy with the way our offense really pressured their defense into making mistakes and we were able to capitalize on those chances.”

Capitalize they did, as just two minutes in senior Sean Regan was able to calmly send home a penalty shot past the Ram keeper to give NP their quickest goal of the season.

“Even though it was early on in the game, I was able to stay composed and put a good shot on net,” Regan said.  “It was really good for our team to be able to get off to a strong start.”

A minute later, midfielder Cristiano Hocken, was able to score his first of two goals, converting on a beautiful run past the Roselle defense to double the lead.

Striker and leading scorer Lorik Berisha put home the Pioneer’s third goal in four minutes, followed by Hocken tallying another to put the game away for New Providence.

“This is what we needed to do against a team like this,” Panella said. “At times we have struggled to get off to strong starts when we should so I’m glad we were able to do so today.”

Ethan Conklin and Chris Kang both scored their first varsity goal in the second half.

All things were going well for the Pioneers, as every bench player saw plenty of action in both halves, however there is some cause for concern as starting midfielder Joe Crisafi went down with an apparent knee injury.

He was assisted off the field and Panella had no further information on the incident.

With the victory, the Pioneers look to go over .500 for the first time this season as they take on Brearley on Tuesday at Lieder Field. Kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m.

Coach Bottone Tribute

2017 Pioneer football players took on a tall task of filling a lot of open spots with not many returning players. We had 30 kids on our football team who all wanted to be there. With a new head coach who just came on board in late April, we had a lot of things to do without much time. Most people would say being on a 1-9 football team would be no fun and, at times, it wasn’t, but it was the ...

The Evaluation of the College Search

It’s is a bizarre time of year as a college counselor as I find myself at both the beginning and end of this process.  Sophomores and juniors are excitedly and idealistically starting to consider what will be important to them in a school.  At the same time, while only separated by a year or two, my seniors have all committed within the past month to a school and have spent the ...
