In a concert entitled Divine Dvořák, the Crescent Choral Society, under the direction of F. Allen Artz, III, will perform two works by Antonín Dvořák on Saturday, November 14th at 7:00 pm as part of Crescent Concerts’ 34th season.

Although most concertgoers know Dvorak’s beautiful symphonies and gorgeous uses of folk melodies, many may not be aware of his stunning compositions of liturgical music, including his Mass in D Major (op. 86) and his Te Deum (op. 103).  The Choral Society will present these rarely performed masterpieces in the splendor of the neo-Gothic Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield.

Montville resident Kaitlyn Bonsell and North Plainfield resident James Cuff will be the soprano and baritone soloists for the Te Deum.  Both are regular members of the Choral Society.  An octet made up of singers from the Choral Society (two from each voice part) is featured throughout the Mass in D.

Dvořák was commissioned to write the Mass in D by his friend Josef Hlávka in 1887 to consecrate a private chapel on Hlávka's estate in southwest Bohemia.  It was designed for a small worship service, and beautifully reflects both the quiet intimacy of its venue and the folk music of its setting.

The opposite extreme is Dvořák's Te Deum, a powerfully majestic setting of the Ambrosian Hymn.  Dvořák composed his Te Deum at the behest of Jeanette Thurber, an American patroness of the arts, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America.  Dvořák intended to set an American poem to music, but when the poem was not provided to him in time, he composed the Te Deum instead.  The composition was performed under his direction for the first time in October of 1892 in New York City.

The Choral Society will be accompanied by Brenda Day on Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church’s beautiful Adams organ.

Most people would say being on a 1-9 football team would be no fun and, at times, it wasn’t, but it was the ...
