SUMMIT, NJ - Family Promise, the Summit-based national nonprofit whose mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response, has once again received a coveted Four-Star Rating from Glen Rock-based Charity Navigator, an independent organization that evaluates United States charities.

As stated on its website, Charity Navigator has, since its founding in 2001, become the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, with a team of professional analysts examining tens of thousands of non-profit financial documents. The organization maintains that it uses this knowledge to develop an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess over 9,000 of America's best-known and some lesser known, but worthy, charities.

“Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating is critical to our brand as a national organization,” said Chris Kaul, Director of Communications for Family Promise. “Our donors rely upon that objective appraisal to know that we are using their funds wisely as we work to help low-income families and families experiencing homelessness reclaim their independence.”

The Charity Navigator Four-Star rating is given to organizations that are qualitatively rated as "exceptional" and described as a charity that "exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause." This year marks the fifth consecutive year Family Promise has earned this top distinction from America’s largest independent charity evaluator.

Michael Thatcher, Charity Navigator’s President and CEO, said, “Attaining a 4-star rating sets Family Promise apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public.  Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive a 4-star rating and just 9% have received at least five consecutive 4-star evaluations.  Based on this rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Family Promise.”

Family Promise was founded in Summit thirty years ago on the belief that Americans are compassionate people who want to make a difference. Today, Family Promise comprises 200+ Affiliates in 43 states, with more in development. Family Promise engages 180,000 volunteers, providing assistance to more than 60,000 family members annually. Since their founding, they have served more than 750,000 people; their holistic, community-based response delivering a comprehensive set of solutions through prevention, shelter, and stabilization programs nationwide.
