NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - A one-car accident on Mountain Avenue Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of the driver, a 70-year-old Springfield man.

According to New Providence Deputy Police Chief Scott Torre, at about 1:55 p.m., a 2005 Honda Accord occupied only by its male driver was traveling wast on Mountain Avenue about 300 yards west of South Street when it struck the curb in the eastbound lane, veered off the roadway and stuck a tree. The driver is believed to have been killed upon impact.

The driver has been identified as Edwin Ganek, 70.

"Witness accounts indicate that there were no other vehicles in the area at the time of the crash," Torre said.

Accident investigators from the New Providence Police Department and the Union County Police Fatal Accident Team are still investigating the crash. The identity of the driver has not yet been released pending notification to the next of kin.
