At the Summit Area YMCA, we are dedicated to the health and well-being of youth in our community. Our 7th Grade membership program gives all 7th graders a free year-long YMCA membership.  This program offers opportunities for fitness and sports, as well as engaging activities and fun events for kids to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently located environment. Our program supports and encourages kids to make good decisions and form healthy habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle, while demonstrating our commitment and philosophy for a well-rounded approach to the healthy development of the whole person.

“I really liked the 7th Grade Initiative program because it teaches kids how to use the equipment the right way from experienced and trained staff.” says Jackson, 7th Grade member of the Summit YMCA. The Summit Area YMCA provides demonstrations for 7th graders to learn how to use gym equipment safely and properly. Demonstrations are approximately one hour long and must be scheduled in advance. Once all demos are completed, 7th graders will have a full access membership to the Y. For youth such as Jackson, learning to properly use gym equipment allowed him to keep healthy and better reach his personal fitness goals.

For Cosette, graduate member of the 7th Grade Initiative at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, she believes, “…that the 7th grade is such an important transitional period for young people. Making healthy habits at this stage really encouraged me to continue the routine after the program.” As child obesity becomes a national epidemic, keeping kids active at an early age is integral to their growth and development into adulthood. At the Summit Area YMCA, children have access to fitness centers, pools, fitness classes like strength and agility training, TRX classes, parties and more.
