“Straight Walk”, a Halloween Fundraising Walk led by the Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support Group of Northern NJ, will be held Saturday, October 31st from 10am to 1pm at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, NJ. The event will feature a DJ, sales of food and crafts, and trick or treat gifts and candy. The event is free and open to the public and families are encouraged to attend in costume. The event will be a fun way for the whole family to kick off their Halloween celebration.

Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support Groups are a network of International Support Groups that provide guidance and mentoring to girls with scoliosis, a curvature of the spine.  The groups support girls while they undergo treatment which can include a hard, plastic brace, physical therapy and spinal fusion surgery.  Funds raised at the walk will go towards the Northern NJ group members attending the Third Annual Curvy Girls Convention to be held in June, 2016 in Long Island.  The Curvy Girls Convention brings together girls from all over the United States, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom, to learn about the newest treatments for this condition.

The Straight Walk Halloween Walk with the Curvy Girls was made possible through a $500 grant from the Keds’ Brave Life Project, won by Gianna Calligy, 14, of Scotch Plains.  Gianna was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was 8 years old and was prescribed a back brace to be worn 23 hours a day.  According to Gianna, “this major change in my life made me sad, angry, and ashamed.  But when I found Curvy Girls, I changed.  I met girls like me who wore back braces to middle and high school, and they made me feel confident in my brace.”  Gianna is now using this grant to give back to Curvy Girls and help to continue to spread the word about this inspirational group.

The Northern New Jersey Curvy Girls group meets monthly in Summit, NJ.  For more information about the New Jersey group meetings, email curvygirlsnjpa@gmail.com.  To register to walk ($20) or to make a donation, visit http://www.firstgiving.com/CurvyGirlsScoliosis/NJ
