SUMMIT, N.J. - The Lady Pioneers girls' soccer team finished the opening day sweep for the New Providence soccer teams on Friday.

Playing at Summit in the first game of their 2014 campaign, strong defense and a timely first half goal led the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over the Hilltoppers.

Erin Fay scored New Providence's lone goal in the first half, with the rest of the game being pure defense.

Veteran goalkeeper Jen Maluso made nine saves to preserve the Pioneers' shutout.

New Providence is back in action on Monday when they host Kearny at Leider Field in their home opener. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
