Research shows that exercise offers a wealth of health benefits for older adults including increasing muscle strength, elevating mood, and improving memory. Lantern Hill, a new retirement community in New Providence, New Jersey, is providing residents with the resources they need to exercise and stay active.
Residents are staying fit and having fun by working out in the state-of-the-art Fitness Center, participating in group exercises classes, swimming laps in the indoor pool, and walking the community's scenic walking trails.
One of the most popular classes, Strength and Tone, is held three times a week. During this one-hour class, Fitness Coordinator Chris Hynson leads participants through a series of stretches and exercises using hand weights as Golden Oldies music plays in the background.
“I enjoy making the class safe, entertaining, and effective for residents,” said Hynson. “It’s gratifying to have residents say not only how much fun they had, but most importantly how better they feel.”
The group exercise sessions are designed to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. The Fitness Center also offers Yoga and Tai Chi, and residents can train privately with Hynson to help stay motivated, encouraged, and meet or exceed their health goals.
“It’s easy to maintain an active lifestyle when all these fantastic amenities are just steps from your door,” said Executive Director Patricia Swan. “It’s all part of staying healthy at Lantern Hill.”
