NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Pottery created by local artist Louise Wheeler is currently on exhibit at the New Providence Memorial Library.

A resident of New Providence for almost 30 years, Wheeler said she first tried her hand at making pottery during her senior year of college at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, “just for fun.”  It was more than fun, though, she never stopped talking about the class.

Wheeler, who is married to Sanjay Patel and the mother of two sons, said “When my youngest son started first grade in 2002, my husband suggested I try a class again. I warned him, somewhat jokingly, that if I started I would never stop. I haven't. I was lucky enough to have Tom Neugebauer as my instructor at the Visual Arts Center of NJ in Summit." She continued studying with him until his retirement last year.

She said she is “still, always,” taking classes and learning more about her art. All her work is fired and glazed at the Visual Arts Center. Each semester she works on a new theme, which means she never gets bored and “can explore really different ideas over time," she said.  That’s the upside. The downside is she has only a “few successful examples from each semester, so I get very attached to them and have a hard time giving many away,” and only occasionally sells a piece.

The exhibit at the library is her first “solo” show, but she has entered her work in the Visual Arts Center of NJ  student show a few times and won Best Ceramics award in 2015.

The show continues through Aug. 4 at the library, 377 Elkwood Ave., during regular library hours. Visit the library’s website or call 908-665-0311
