NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Building on previous successful efforts, the borough has once again embarked on an ambitious effort to micropave 18 streets. Borough Administrator Doug Marvin said the effort will take four days.

The micropaving process allows the borough to preserve roadways from deterioration and an opportunity to avoid costly repair or repaving work.  Borough roads are maintained without the need for milling and resurfacing.  Thus, the borough is able to maintain more streets at lower cost than traditional paving.  Marvin said costs are approximately 20% of conventional paving.

After application, the road surface is initially dark brown in color but changes to a finished black surface as water is chemically ejected and the surface cures. In most cases, traffic is allowed within one hour.

According to a borough fact sheet provided to affected residents, the process will not result in the same smooth finish as a road that has been milled and repaved.  Due to the nature of the material, the surface appears somewhat rough and uneven immediately following application.  With traffic usage, the road smooths resulting in a solid, stable surface.

Meeting in an abbreviated summer session with three members on vacation, the Borough Council approved two resolutions totaling $20,450 for irrigation and landscaping improvements at Hillview Field.

“The drainage at the field will be improved tremendously,” Councilman Jim Madden said.  The field will be closed until next March as renovation of artificial turf take place.

In other actions, the council approved the introduction of an ordinance to renovate and reconstruct four basketball courts at the Community Pool.

The cost of $200,000 will include the issuance of bonds or notes of $105,000.  Councilman Dr. Bob Robinson said the courts will be available for use by non-pool members.

Councilman Armand Galluccio and Mr. Madden reported attending a candlelight vigil for four-year-old Brooke Healey who has an inoperable brain tumor and is undergoing treatment in New York.  Galluccio said more than 150 people gathered on the soccer field at Our Lady of Peace Church.
