NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Boys varsity soccer player Sean Regan, an essential piece of New Providence’s team in 2013, has been named The Alternative Press of New Providence’s Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore striker and midfielder scored seven goals for the Pioneers, a feat he hopes to improve on for next year.
“I had a lot of fun this season but I need to improve on scoring more goals,” Regan said. “If I can score more goals, we will have a much better season next year.”
In this year’s state playoff game against Glen Ridge, which the Pioneers' won, 2-1, Sean scored both goals for New Providence during the game.
"Sean played the best game I had seen all year," New Providence head coach Ted Niedzielski said.
Although the boys soccer season has recently come to an end with a 2-0 playoff loss against Brearley, that doesn’t mean Sean’s season has ended as well.
“During the off-season, I’m planning on getting as fit as I can,” Regan said. “When I’m fit, I play well. If I’m fit for the entire season, I’ll help out my team as much as I can.”
Starting next fall, the Pioneers look to start fresh. With the team losing notable upperclassmen such as James Burke and Zain Stedman, underclassmen such as Sean will help the team make their way toward a state title next season.
