NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The Pioneer senior baseball players got the best gift anyone could ask for: a state tournament win.

On the day devoted to celebrating the careers of New Providence’s graduating class, the Pioneers also advanced into the North Jersey 2, Group 1 quarterfinals with a 14-0 victory over Shabazz on Monday at Miller Field.

Nine players combined to get 14 runs on 13 hits off Shabazz pitching. Junior Alan Payne went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs, while seniors Marc Giacalone and Bryan Sherman each drove in two runs of their own.

Alex Shema and Dean Bogdanovic combined for the four-hit shutout victory over the Bulldogs.

The Pioneers will visit No. 4 University Charter in the section quarterfinals on Thursday.
