NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The Borough Council honored the New Providence business community at its Monday, March 13 meeting for their continued contribution to the community. “The town wouldn’t be what it is without you,” Mayor Al Morgan said.

Morgan presented the certificates to the following businesses with representatives attending: Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Creative Wallcoverings, Davies and Associates, Elefante Music, Investor’s Savings Bank, NP Lions Club, Martial Arts for Life, NJ Sharing Network, Zita’s Homemade Ice Cream and Prestige Diner. Additionally, Lantern Hill, Braunsweiger’s Jewelers, UC Board of Chosen Freeholders, Lassus Wherley, Overlook Medical Center and Summit Medical Group also earned the certificate.

The business community supports many local events, including such New Providence staples as the annual Christmas Walk and the Street Fair.  The association also contributes to summer concerts, Farmers Market, Independence Day fireworks, Halloween downtown trick-or-treating and the charity 5K race. The business community also organizes the annual holiday party for borough employees, volunteers, committee members and the members of the business association.

In other news the council briefly discussed the many Facebook pages various borough groups maintain. Council President Gary Kapner suggested that the borough should do an inventory of what is “out there.” Borough Administrator Doug Marvin said that it is unclear who created the pages and who is maintaining them. He said he will get the inventory done.

The council also welcomed Jeremy DeMarco’s Eagle Scout project to build a trail system between the Oakwood Park and Passaic River Park. The project includes clearing the trails and creating billboards showing the map of the trail system. The area to be cleared is within the borough property, except a small partial which belongs to Union County.

Councilman Jim Madden also noted that the Oakwood Park Field renovation is behind schedule. Therefore the spring sports scheduling is “really challenging,” he said and asked all parties to be flexible and cooperate to ensure that all sport groups will get equal field time. The Easter Egg hunt is scheduled to take place on the Oakwood Field despite the fact that the construction gear is still present there, Madden said. Councilman Michael Gennaro suggested that the organizer is made aware of the situation in order to ensure everybody’s safety.

Madden, a dog owner, also noted that some residents are taking liberties and using new fields as dog parks. He asked residents not to let dogs out on the newly renovated fields. The borough will be looking into creating a dog park. One potential site could be the Ping Wang Property which is scheduled to be cleared for passive recreation.
