New Providence Boys Basketball Team Uses 3rd-Quarter Outburst to Top Morris Catholic, 67-62

DENVILLE, NJ - The New Providence boys basketball team won its second game in as many days as the Pioneers outlasted Morris Catholic in a 67-62 shootout on the road.

Morris Catholic hit the first bucket of the game, but the Pioneers responded with a 9-0 run to take an early lead thanks to buckets by Matt Romeo and Bryan Sherman

However, Morris Catholic answered by going on a 9-0 run of its own to take a two-point advantage.

The first quarter ended with Morris Catholic leading, 18-16.

Both teams went back and forth offensively throughout the second quarter, and the Pioneers pulled within one at the half because of the strong play of junior Dylan Thomas.

Going into the second half, New Providence turned it up to another gear offensively to take command of the game.  Curtis Kyzima scored six of his team-high 15 points over a two-possession span, where he first buried a long range three, followed by a three-point play the old-fashioned way shortly thereafter.

A run by Morris Catholic cut the Pioneer lead to 51-49, but a three-pointer by Matt Romeo swung the momentum back in New Providence’s direction.

The Pioneers, winners of four of their last five games, were able to hang on when Kyzima and Sherman were able to ice the game with free throws in the final minute.

The victory improves New Providence to 6-4, and the Pioneers will look for their third consecutive victory when they take on Oratory in Summit Friday night.
