NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – For the first time in the history of the program, the Pioneers’ boys lacrosse team is two wins away from a state title.

Senior attackers James Burke and Jon Ebert scored three goals each to lead New Providence past Delaware Valley Regional, 11-1, in the South Jersey, Group 1 quarterfinal at Lieder Field on Tuesday.

“It feels awesome,” Ebert said. “I’ve never done that before. We’re just looking to continue our good play and get as far as we can.”

The Pioneers never gave Del Val a chance to compete in this game. After a scoreless opening four minutes, New Providence pounded the Terriers for three goals over the next four minutes to break the game open.

Burke was a part of all three goals in the first quarter. He opened the scoring with a goal, then assisted Ebert’s first with 6:00 left, before putting in his second of the game with 4:08 to play.

Ebert said the strong first quarter should be a regular occurrence for the Pioneers attack.

“When [we] move it around the cage like that, we have the right offense to do it,” Ebert said. “We just put it in the back of the net today.”

New Providence did not stop after the first. Ebert and Burke exchanged goals late in the second quarter. Then in the third, the Pioneers added three more goals wrapped around a Terrier tally. Ebert, Quinn Killeen and Steve Anderson all scored for NP in the frame.

Leading 8-1 in the fourth, Jack Harvey made his presence felt. After being shutout of the first three quarters, the Pioneers’ leading score found the net twice in a span of three minutes to close out the game.

No New Providence player scored more than three goals in the game, which is a positive in the eyes of head coach Vinny Carangelo.

“That’s the beauty of what we got,” Carangelo said. “If we can stay balanced and those guys can continue to trust each other, I think its really difficult to stop us. We can hit you from a lot of different places. Its not just one guy. Its not just high or just at ‘X,’ we have guys in a lot of different spots.”

The Pioneers quest for a state championship is down to just two more victories. They visit top-seeded Rumson later this week.
