NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The road to a coveted NJSIAA South, Group 1 title is one step closer as New Providence eased past Verona, 12-5, Wednesday afternoon at Lieder Field.
Winners of 15 of 16 games, with their only loss coming to highly ranked Summit, the Pioneers haven’t cooled down since their rocky start to the season and look to extend that streak into a state run.
A strong offensive start, orchestrated by senior Tyler Lawton’s seven goals, paired with a stifling defensive effort gave the Pioneers a comfortable 7-0 halftime lead, a lead they would never come close to relinquishing, despite a closely contested second half.
“We had some great looks that we weren’t able to capitalize on, but I know our guys will get to work on it over the next two days,” said New Providence head coach Russ Anderson. “I still feel our best lacrosse is still in front of us.”
The victory means the Pioneers will have a rematch against Delaware Valley, a side that New Providence has battled closely with over the years, while also scratching out a win against on the road less than two weeks ago, 7-6.
“We have a tough opponent on Saturday that we will have to really prepare and get ready for,” said Anderson. “This group has done a great job of focusing and executing during practice all year and we look to continue that trend moving forward.”
The quarterfinal match-up against Delaware Valley is slated for Saturday at Lieder Field at New Providence High School.
