NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - After a one-year hiatus, the Pioneer boys’ tennis program returned to glory with a 3-2 victory over visiting Leonia.

Despite coming into the sectional final as the number one overall seed, which comes with home court advantage, the Pioneers had a tall task ahead of them as they were facing a side in Leonia that had yet to drop a match all season, coming in with a perfect 14-0 record.

That didn’t faze New Providence, as they dominated at the back three spots to capture what would prove to be their 9th sectional title in the past 10 years, an unprecedented feat for Pioneer athletics.

Leonia was able to put the pressure in the Pioneers after they cruised to victories at the first and second singles positions, as between the two spots, they only dropped one game in total.

With Leonia only one point away from snatching the title from New Providence, the bottom three for the Pioneers were able to flip the script, starting with 3rd singles Nikhil Choudhary cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory that got New Providence on the board.

The first doubles team of David Caminiti and Max Ortiz-Ahedo were able to even things at 2 apiece when they too claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory, a result that put the balance of the match in the hands of second doubles.

After breezing through the first set 6-0, it was a hotly contested second set, but the team of Abhishek Agarwal and Will Krska edged out a 6-4 second set to complete the comeback and give the Pioneers the title.

With the triumph, New Providence advances to the Group 1 semifinals on Wednesday, where they take on Mountain Lakes for a chance to play in the Group 1 finals later that day.  All of the group semifinals and finals take place Wednesday morning and afternoon at Mercer County Park in West Windsor.

Congrats to the boys’ tennis team on their title!
