NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Pioneers boys’ tennis team overpowered rival Dayton in the North 2, Group 1 Sectional Championship by a score of 5-0 to claim their unprecedented fifth consecutive sectional title.

At 3rd singles, junior Kevin Stinchcomb, the runner-up at the Union County Championship, set the pace for the Pioneers, breezing past his opponent 6-2, 6-0.

Soon thereafter, senior co-captain Kevin Maluso, at second singles, gave New Providence a 2-0 lead by toppling Jarred Graber 6-2, 6-1.

With two victories in hand, the Pioneers needed one more victory to clinch the title, which is exactly what Jack Galardi and David Sann accomplished, defeating Dayton’s first doubles team 6-3, 6-2.

With the match already decided, Brett Caminiti and Daike Ogino took care of business at second doubles, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Lastly, first-singles star co-captain Alex Hocken overcame a lengthy first set and triumphed 7-6(7-3), 6-2 over Ross Schickler to complete the sweep.

The Pioneers seek their third straight Group 1 championship when they travel to Mercer County Park in West Windsor to take on Shore in the group semi-finals on Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m.
