NEW PROVIDENCE - On March 16th, some 40-plus New Providence residents convened at the town’s Borough Hall for the first New Providence Democrats meeting. Among those in attendance were Democratic senate candidate, Jill LaZare, and assembly candidates David Barnett and Lacey Rzeszowski. Nick Fixmer, the executive director of the Union County Democrat Committee, was also in attendance.

This Democratic revival group began forming at the grassroots level shortly after the November election out of a desire to see changes at both the borough and state levels. Many borough candidates have run unopposed during several election cycles and the NP Democrats would like to change that to include more choices on ballots—something the group strongly believes has been lacking for quite some time. At the meeting, several residents put forth their names as borough council candidates introducing themselves to the crowd and providing an overview of their backgrounds, experience and their strong desire to add new voices and ideas to the New Providence community. These prospects will be vetted by the committee and Democratic candidates for the 2017 borough council election will be announced shortly.

Committees have already been formed and an agenda is being set going forward. The New Providence Democrats goal is to have a stronger presence in town and throughout its government.

The next scheduled meeting will be on Thursday, April 27th, at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Borough Hall. Childcare will be available for those who need it. If you would like more information on New Providence Democrats, you can e-mail them at or visit their Facebook page at
