NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Diversity Committee on Sunday sponsored a Diwali celebration at the DeCorso Center that attracted an overflow crowd.
The DeCorso Community and Senior Center was filled to capacity and had a waiting list of people wanting to attend. Cultural foods, art and music were featured. Neighbors celebrated by dressing in traditional attire.
Christine Morgan, a Diversity Committee member and supporter said, "I was so moved by all the beautiful songs, music, and dancing. Diwali is so festive and rich in art, music, and spirituality. I learned so much and truly enjoyed sharing such a beautiful and inspiring event with friends and neighbors. That is really what I love most about the Diversity Committee, our coming together and learning from each other, embracing our differences and sharing each other's cultures, joys, and challenges.
"The strength of our community lies within our diversity," she added. "Today more than ever, we need to unite as a human family, love more and hate less. The work we do at home and within our own communities, at the grass root level, is the most important work in bringing everyone together as a community, embracing good, enriching lives and our children's lives with meaningful human interaction across all aisles and all cultures, and learning from each other. We are so blessed to have so many wonderful cultures and traditions right here in our own backyards to share with each other."
"Namaste and Happy Diwali to all our neighbors who celebrate," Mayor Al Morgan said. "I was honored to attend this joyous occasion thanks to our Diversity Committee who continually strive to share and educate us about our different cultures and traditions. Everyone and everything was so festive this evening. The dancers especially, and singers, were truly impressive! New Providence is rich in many diverse cultures. It's really so exciting to share and learn about each one with each other."
