NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Everyone can recall memories behind the creations of New Providence Florist and the work of Charlie Hovanec and his daughter Abbie -- be it a sweetheart dance corsage, a red rose handed out at the Christmas Walk, Valentine's Day, the many weddings and special occasions -- or a pick-me-up bouquet! It is an end of an era as New Providence Florist prepares to close their doors after 46 years in business.

Recently, Mayor Al Morgan made a visit to the florist before their doors close for good. Mayor Al read a proclamation in honor of Hovanec's contribution to the community.

"It is my great honor to present Charlie Hovanec a proclamation and keys to the city. Please join me in thanking him, his daughter Abbie, and his family for 46 years of loyal service to the Borough of New Providence," said Mayor Al. "We will miss New Providence Florist and their generous contributions to our community. We are so sad to see them go, but wish Charlie a very happy and well-deserved retirement."

The proclamation read:

WHEREAS, fresh out of the Army and newly married to his wife of 46 years, Charlie Hovanec came to New Providence in 1973 and started New Providence Florist with his father-in-law, Ted Harris, who retired in 1982; and

WHEREAS, the original store was located on South Street in part of what is now Barth’s Market; and

WHEREAS, as Charlie’s family grew with four young children, so did his business, and he was joined in 1998 by his daughter, Abbie; and

WHEREAS, in 2001 they moved across the street into the charming, antique house that has housed New Providence Florist since then; and

WHEREAS, as the years went on and customer relationships became friendships, New Providence Florist celebrated all of life’s occasions with the community, from births and weddings to proms and football games and all the events in between; and

WHEREAS, if he ever heard someone complain about their job, Charlie would always chime in and say, “I love my job!” and it always showed by the way he treated his customers; and

WHEREAS, Charlie’s creative talents were always evident when you walked into his store or received one of his beautiful bouquets.  He decorated many buildings and churches throughout New Providence and surrounding towns for special occasions; and

WHEREAS, Charlie and Abbie cultivated a warm, welcoming atmosphere for their customers to enjoy and created a little oasis from the hectic hustle and bustle of everyday life.

NOW THEREFORE I, Allen Morgan, Mayor of the Borough of New Providence, County of Union and State of New Jersey, hereby thank Charlie and Abbie for their contributions to New Providence and the surrounding communities over the last 46 years and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
