NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The Lady Pioneers have made the NJSIAA North Jersey 2, Group 1 tournament look easy in their first two games.

After blasting away North Star Academy on Tuesday, New Providence ran over Dunellen, 58-27, on Wednesday, to advance to the section semifinal on Friday.

Freshman star Katie Kinum led all scorers with 17 points to lead the Pioneers into a date with Secaucus in the section “Final Four.”

New Providence jumped out quick on the Destroyers, opening the game on a 14-0 run. By the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers were comfortably ahead 21-5.

Kinum said the game plan all along was to come out fast and show Dunellen who the better team was from the start.

“I think we wanted to come out really strong and show that we were the better team here,” Kinum said, “because we want to go far and we want to do it for our seniors and we want to do it for us because we deserve to be there. To come out strong and showing the team we were strong, it controlled the pace for the rest of the game.”

For the second game in a row, New Providence head coach Cap Pazdera was able to get his bench significant minutes in the game. The reserves played a majority of the second and fourth quarters. Guard Sarah Zeto benefited from her time on the floor, scoring 10 points off the bench.

The Pioneers now have a day to prepare for No. 3 Secaucus on Friday night at New Providence High School.

Even though the previous two games were never really close, Kinum said the Pioneers have benefited the most because of the limited minutes their starters have played.

“It definitely helps,” Kinum said. “Its good for us to get everyone else in because it is a team. They work hard in practice and deserve the time. It does help all of us get ready to play, have fresh legs and not be nervous. It keeps us fresh.”

Tip-off for Friday’s section semifinal at New Providence High School is currently scheduled for 6 p.m.
