NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - On Wednesday evening, thousands of residents flocked to South Street for New Providence’s annual Fourth of July Celebration. The center of town was bustling with families by 7 p.m., which marked the start of the festivities.
The celebration wasn’t just for adults. In fact, the children of New Providence made up a majority of the crowd. By far, the most popular activity for children was “Chalk on South”, with each child leaving several drawings and messages on the street in colored chalk. By 8 pm the kids had created a mural on South Street that spread hundreds of feet, covered with thousands of messages.
“I love New Providence at this time of year,” said Dominique Paredes-Rupp, looking out at the crowd “it’s great when the whole community comes out to celebrate, it’s a nice atmosphere.”
DJ John Souren of Club Souren kept that atmosphere going from the NP Fuel “Jets” Truck, where he played hours of great music for the event. Other entertainment at the event included veteran juggler Will Shaw, as well as a brand new face-painting stand by Strawberry Fields. Zita’s also set up a freestanding Italian Ice booth especially for the event, which proved to be a hit across all ages.
As the evening wound down, families began to settle onto blankets and lawn chairs that were lined all the way down South Street in preparation for the fireworks show at 9:30. The annual fireworks lasted for about 20 minutes, and featured a wide variety of designs and patterns.
As in recent years, the event was sponsored by the New Providence Business community businesses, with Investors Bank being the prime sponsor of the celebration.
