New Providence, NJ - The New Providence Pioneers 8U softball team completed the summer softball season with a second place finish in the D2 Parkway League playoff tournament.
After finishing the regular season in a three-way tie for first place, the Pioneers earned the top overall seed for the playoffs thanks to a strong defense that allowed just 2 runs a game on average.
This trend continued as the girls started tournament play. In the opening round of the playoffs, they faced a familiar opponent in Maplewood South Orange. The girls in green jumped out to an an early lead and never looked back, winning 6-1.
The win put the Pioneers in the semifinals against South Plainfield. New Providence relied on that strong defense as well as some timely hitting, winning by a score of 7-1.
The championship game put the Pioneers at home hosting a talented team from Clark. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. Clark answered the call in the next inning scoring 3, and the teams battled back and forth after that. with a score of 5-4 after the 5th inning, Clark finished out the last inning with a few extra base hits that closed it out and gave them the win, 10-4. It was a well-played game from two very talented teams.
The coaches are very proud of the girls and the season they had and would like to thank the Parkway League for a great summer season.
