NJ Intergenerational Orchestra Looks Forward to a Fantastic Musical Season

The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra (NJIO) is excited to welcome newcomers to its 22nd season.  Whether you are a musician looking for an excellent non-competitive orchestra to join or an avid classical music lover seeking free concerts, NJIO invites you to learn more about this organization based in New Providence. 

At the beginning of the 2015-16 season, NJIO will hold two open house rehearsals on September 17 and 24.  Musicians of all ages and abilities are welcome to join one or all of our orchestras during these rehearsals.  It’s the start of a new concert period and the music is new to everyone.  Come get the feel of the orchestra and see why the musicians love being a part of the NJIO family!  Light refreshments will be provided.  Prelude, an ensemble intended for beginning strings, rehearses 4:30-5:30.  Intermezzo, an intermediate-level group that recently expanded to a full symphony orchestra (strings, winds, brass, and percussion), rehearses from 5:45-7 and Symphony, the more advanced symphony orchestra, rehearses from 7:15-9:30.

Mark it on your calendar: NJIO’s first concert of the season is Sunday, November 15th at 3pm.  Symphony, conducted by Artistic Director Warren Cohen, will play works by Beethoven, Kallinikov, and Lalo.  The orchestra will accompany cellist Heechan Ku, the second-place winner of NJIO’s annual Young Artist Concerto Competition, on the Lalo Cello Concerto.

  • Prelude (Beginning) Ensemble from 4:30 - 5:30 pm
  • Intermezzo (Intermediate) Orchestra from 5:45 - 7:00 pm
  • Symphony Orchestra from 7:15 - 9:30 pm

New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra, now in its 22nd season, has been recognized as a national leader in intergenerational excellence through its unique approach to teaching musical performance and as a model for intergenerational orchestras across the country.  Not only do the intergenerational members play together, but they also mentor each other.  In addition to providing free concerts and outreach to the community, NJIO has been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and at the United Nations, and was a finalist for the Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence.  NJIO welcomes new members of all ages and abilities each concert period to one of its several orchestras - no auditions needed!
