NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Letters have been written to Gov. Phil Murphy by Mayor Al Morgan, as well as from many others dignitaries, parents and students from across the state asking for the Governor to allow in person graduations for the Class of 2020.

In Mayor Al Morgan's letter, he stated New Providence High School's graduating seniors have been enduring so much, and have already lost so much of their school year, being robbed of their well deserved senior privileges and final childhood memories before embarking on adulthood and their futures. He said, "We cannot in good consciousness ask them and their families to sacrifice their high school graduation when now, we here in New Providence, can very safely and more than adequately provide them an outdoor socially distanced and safe graduation."

Gov. Phil Murphy announced today, outdoor graduations will be allowed after July 6, 2020.

So, will NPHS have an outdoor graduation on Lieder Field? Indications are leading to yes!

On May 10, Dr. David Miceli, Superintendent of Schools, addressed the concerns on the remainder of the school year.  At that time, he said,“It is not our intention to hold virtual ceremonies. We very much would like to gather at some point and celebrate with everybody present.” He noted that the district is willing to be patient and wait until a later date in the summer to hold a ceremony if that is deemed as an option.

In response to TAPinto New Providence's inquiry today, NP BOE president Bernadette Cuccaro, said, "It has always been our hope that the Class of 2020 will graduate on Lieder Field -- we are still waiting on the additional guidelines to come from the Governor tomorrow before a final decision is made about graduation."

There is hope for a July Lieder Field graduation for the New Providence High School Class of 2020.
