Barbara Densen learned she had late-stage lung cancer in 2010, and brought her fight to Mass General. Densen underwent multiple lung cancer therapies but she eventually became resistant to her therapies and passed away in July, 2013. Given less than a year to live at diagnosis, she survived and thrived for more than three years, living long enough to see her daughter marry, a son graduate high school, and to fulfill a lifetime wish to hike the hills of Sedona and visit the Grand Canyon. In her memory, friends and family of Barbara Densen created the Targeting a Cure for Lung Cancer Fund to support the lung cancer research program at Mass General.
Lung cancer kills three times more people than any other cancer, and it claims substantially more female lives than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined. One in 14 Americans — most of whom never smoked or stopped smoking a long time ago — will receive a lung cancer diagnosis. Most will not survive five years.
Join Pure Pilates in the fight for a cure, and in support of all those currently living with the disease.
About Mass General Hospital for Ground Breaking Cancer Therapy:
Mass General Hospital has led the way in developing targeted therapies, “smart bombs” that seek out and kill cancer cells with a specific genetic mutation. A common mutation found in lung cancer — epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) — was discovered at Mass General in the early 2000s.
