On Sunday, September 12, Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence will celebrate Rally Day with two eucharistic services, featuring New Orleans jazz. One will be at 8:30 am and the other at 11:00 am.

The jazz liturgy, which has become a custom at Faith on Rally Day, will be led by the Sanctuary Choir and a seven piece 1920's New Orleans jazz band. Traditional spirituals; such as "Precious Lord," "Amazing Grace," and "Oh! When the Saints Come Marching In," will be sung. Players in the band include Max Morden, cornet; Nick Scheuble, drums; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Bill Crow, bass; Joel Perry, guitar; and Jack Stuckey, clarinet. The players have performed with such jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, Benny Goodman, Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz. The ensemble will be led by Faith's Minister of Music, Dr. John Girvin, who will also be on the piano.

Dr. Girvin said, "Each Rally Day, we try to play in as authentic a New Orleans style as possible, using the hymns and old spirituals as our basis for improvisation. The congregation always responds by singing with terrific energy."

Rev. Dr. Murdoch MacPherson will preach at both Holy Communion services.

The Sunday Forum, which is at 9:40 am, will be a celebration in Franklin Nelson Hall of the various ministries of Faith Lutheran; such as Hospitality for the Homeless, Newark Soup Kitchen, Appalachia, Habitat for Humanity, Thanksgiving Food Collection, Christmas Sharing Tree, African Mission Program, New Providence ARC Home and Pedals for Progress.

Members of the community are invited to each of the services as well as to the Forum. 9 Faith Lutheran is located at 524 South Street in New Providence. The phone number is 908-464-5177. Faith's web site is www.famfaith.org
