NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Reagan Wawzycki's impact on the New Providence girls lacrosse program has been immediate and it has been profound.

A freshman who was thrust right into the varsity starting lineup this season, Wawzycki has scored 70 goals, assisted on 20 goals, won 51 faceoffs and claimed 28 ground balls.

And the ninth-grader has done all this while making the transition to a new position, shifting from attack, which she played in middle school, to midfield.

"Reagan has been an instrumental contributor to our team this season," New Providence girls lacrosse coach Jennifer Henry said. "Although only a freshman, she has seamlessly integrated into the team and taken a prominent role.  Reagan brings a confident and mature presence to our team."

Wawzycki recently had a run of three consecutive games in which she scored five goals in each game. And that streak came just two games after she had scored seven goals in a game against Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

"Reagan, one of only three freshmen on the team, has been a starter in every game this season as a midfielder and has had a significant impact on our success," said Henry, whose team is 12-6. "She currently has 70 goals, 20 assists, 28 ground balls and 51 draw controls this season.  These are stunning stats for any player, particularly a freshman, and don’t nearly represent all the value she adds."

Among other qualities, Wawzycki has displayed maturity and poise beyond her years.

"She is even-keeled and reserved but a vocal leader when needed and always a great competitor," Henry said. "I look forward to several more years with Reagan and being part of what is on its way to being a truly distinguished career."

Wawzycki took a few moments to participate in a question-and-answer session with TAPinto New Providence:

Q: Have you seen your game change since you arrived at the high school level?
A: Prior to high school, I played attack. Now at the high school level, I play as a midfielder. This opportunity has really helped me improve upon my defensive skills and contribute more to my team.

Q: What has been the best advice you have received from a coach?
A: The best advice I've ever received from a coach has been to leave everything I've got on the field. I'm so grateful to be able to play lacrosse at the varsity level, so giving all my energy and effort is something I try to do every game. I want to come off the field feeling like I gave it all I had for my team, every time.

Q: What has been your most memorable game to date?
A:  My most memorable game to date was our overtime win over Montclair-Kimberley Academy. It was a hard-fought battle and come from behind win against a very tough team.

Q: What do you like most about New Providence High School?
A: What I like most about NPHS are the friendships I have made through my academics and athletics. My classmates and teammates have become so important to me and have made freshman year so much fun.

Q: Do you have a favorite subject? Favorite teacher?
A: I would say my favorite subject is biology with Mr. Butterfield. Mr. Butterfield knows all there is to know about biology, and keeps class 100% everyday.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete?
A: My favorite athlete is my grandfather. He was an awesome baseball player with unbelievable knowledge about the game. He played many sports his whole life and made each one look easy. He never missed a day of golf or softball. We share the same love of sports and competition. RIP Pop.

Q: Do you have a role model?
A: My role model is my brother, Richie. He has shown me a lot about not giving up and that working hard to accomplish your goals pays off. I wouldn't be the athlete I am today without him.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not playing a sport?
A: Sleep.
