The New Providence Reds Baseball Team defeated the Jersey City Rays 9-2 on Sunday in the first round of the New Jersey Amateur Baseball League playoffs. The Reds were led by dominate pitching and timely hitting in the victory.
Prior to the game New Providence PAL Baseball player Brody D’Amico threw out the first pitch, an honor he won at a recent Brooke Healey Foundation Casino Night event.
Once the game was underway, two-time league Cy-Young award winner Scott Horowitz pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Reds. Horowitz struck out 11, while allowing one earned run, scattering five hits and walking none on the afternoon. Harry Cohen and Peter House each pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter each to close out the game.
The Reds were paced at the plate by catcher Will Anderson. In the third inning of a scoreless game, shortstop Matt Nesto drove in the first Reds run on a groundout to the shortstop. Anderson followed up with a two-run double to make the score 3-0. After third baseman Tom Pavero reached on an error, Horowitz then helped himself out with a two-run single of his own to extend the Reds lead to 5-0.
In the 5th inning, Anderson would continue his productive day at the plate blasting a solo homerun over the left field fence that landed in the Oakwood Park lower playground to extend the Reds lead to 6-0. Anderson would finish the day 2-4 with three RBI.
The Rays would get within 6-2 in the sixth inning but an RBI single by Nick Sommo in the bottom of the sixth inning and a two-run single by Tom Pavero in the 7th inning put the game away for good.
The 4th seeded Reds will now head to Hawthorne to face the 3rd seeded Hawthorne Chicos with first pitch scheduled for 11am Sunday at Hawthorne High School.
The Reds are managed by Matt Sommo and Sal Nesto, both of New Providence and both former coaches on the college level. This season, the Reds are again sponsored by Orangetheory Fitness located in the Village Shopping Center in New Providence. Also sponsoring the Reds this season is the Chimney Rock Inn, with locations in Gillette, Bound Brook and a brand new location in Flemington.
The Reds are a part of the New Jersey Amateur Baseball League (NJABL) and were the Metal Division Champions in 2013 and 2014 and the Intermediate Wood Champions in 2016.
