NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The ninth annual New Providence-Berkeley Heights Interfaith Thanksgiving Worship was held Monday at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Providence.
Rev Tom Haverly led the opening processional and welcomed a full delegation of local residents and friends to this annual festive community fellowship. Mayor Al Morgan, followed by the mayor of Berkeley Heights, Robert Woodruff, delivered greetings and messages of community thanks, hope, unity and gratitude, stressing the importance of coming together as a community.
Rev. Dr. Murdoch Mac Pherson of Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence led a Call to Worship. Rev. Diane Ruffle gave a "Blessing of the Community" followed by hymns and prayers sung by volunteer choristers and instrumentalists led by Choral Director Shayne Miller. Rev. Bill Mahon from Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church offered the Sharing of Peace.
Rabbi Avi Friedman from the Congregation Ohr Shalom-Summit Jewish Community Center then shared a reading from the Fifth Book of the Torah, Deuteronomy 15: 7-11 first in Hebrew and then in English. Satjeet Kaur Nayar from Bridgewater Gurudwara, Garden State Sikh Association read from Guru Sahib (the Sikh Holy Book) and also invited everyone to join in discussion and fellowship in the church hall after the service for a reception.
An offering was also collected for the Family Promise of Union County. Canned goods were also collected for the Starfish Pantry in Plainfield.
