NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Suburban Chamber of Commerce elected its 2018 Board of Directors and Officers at its annual holiday party on Wednesday evening at CWI.design in New Providence.
Outgoing Chair Mike Shapiro, founder and CEO of TAPinto, thanked the 2017 Directors and Officers for their service and the Chamber membership for their support. He discussed a series of accomplishments during his term that included the implementation of new programs for its members like Wine Down Wednesdays and the improved First Fridays meetings at Grand Summit Hotel.
He also credited Dr. Patrick Smith and chamber board members for their initiative to increase Berkeley Heights membership by holding monthly Berkeley Heights meetings. "That was one of the things when I became chair I thought was really important," said Shapiro. "We represent businesses in Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights -- let's bring as many of those businesses in the fold as we can, and we have done a lot in that regard. I credit Dr. Smith and his team in Berkeley Heights for doing that in Berkeley Heights."
Shapiro commented on the changes that have been made to The Collection [the Suburban Chamber of Commerce's publication] to bring it to profitability. Another successful addition is the introduction of event sponsorship by Chamber members, said Shapiro. "That has improved cash flow and has given them recognition in front of all our Chamber members."
There will be an operating net surplus after expenses for the first time in many years, Shapiro added. The Balance Sheet has been strengthened and the line of credit has been paid down. "I credit the board and the leadership -- we brought a lot of fiscal responsibility to the Chamber, " said Shapiro. "We made it an organization that, I believe, will be sustainable for many years to come -- and that is really exciting."
Chamber treasurer Rick Wolffe agreed that the Chamber is much more solvent than last year and had the Balance Sheet available for the members.
John Blasi then installed the newly elected board members for a three year term, including:
- Summit - Joe Steiner and Rick Wolffe, TSP Capital Management Group
- Berkeley Heights - Jim DiMaio, Derco Print, Inc.
- At Large - Bobbie Peer, TAPinto Berkeley Heights, TAPinto New Providence
Outgoing Chair Shapiro passed the proverbial gavel to incoming Chair Marcella Gencarelli. "I am very excited for the next coming year -- we will have lots of fun stuff in store," said Gencarelli. She mentioned the upcoming events for 2018 including First Fridays; Awards Dinner, March 21 at the Grand Summit Hotel; and Wind Down Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Oratory Prep.
