Summit's Beacon UU Hosts 'Blessing of the Animals' Service Feb. 18

Beacon UU Member Bev Awbrey with Maxx.

SUMMIT, NJ - Community members and their household pets are invited to Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation (Beacon UU) for a 'Blessing of the Animals' service on February 18, beginning at 11:15 a.m.

“All beloved creatures are welcome—from the pet snail to the family dog,” said Reverend Robin Tanner, minister of worship and outreach. Children and adults without live pets are welcome to bring stuffed animals or photos of pets from the past.

For the service, the pets will be welcomed into the sanctuary provided they have no history of problems with people or other animals. Any animals requiring a leash or containment must be properly secured.

There will be no animal blessing during the congregation’s first service, at 9:30 a.m. Instead, a program of song and spoken word will affirm “respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part,” a core UU belief.

Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation is located at 4 Waldron Avenue.

You Want a Check for How Much!

My first admissions gig was working for a small liberal arts college with a pretty hefty price tag.  Picture me at a college fair: name tag in place, pile of brochures ready to go.  An eager family would walk up and we’d start a conversation.  One of the first questions I’d get from parents was about cost and the moment that $50,000-plus figure left my mouth I ...
