Unfortunately I am informing you that we had an suspicious incident which occurred on Central Avenue this afternoon at 3:10pm. The incident involved a 16 year old high school girl who was walking in a westerly direction on Central Avenue west of Balcom Avenue. The girl was approached by a white or Hispanic male approximately 30 years of age, with facial hair on his chin and glasses. The suspect was driving a small silver car with tinted windows, no plate info was obtained. The student was approached by the car pulling up along side her and the suspect rolled down his passenger side window and asked how she was, he told her she was pretty and asked if she lived around here. He continued to ask her name and told her his name was Romero asking her if she needed a ride. She advised him that she did not want a ride and the suspect said "OK have a nice day" and drove down the road, The student acted very appropriately and continued walking and reported the incident to police immediately upon getting home. Police officers performed an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate the suspect or the vehicle involved.
Detectives have interviewed the student and will share this information with agencies in our area. Dr. Miceli has been made aware of this incident and will be sending out this information through his school e-mail list.
Although no criminal act occurred this afternoon, this incident is of concern and should be taken seriously. I can assure you that we will have our officers out in force checking the school areas during early mornings and afternoons when students are walking to and from school. Please use this opportunity to talk to your children about this and other incidents and make sure they know how to react if a similar incident were to happen to them.
This is all the information we have at this time. I will update you if further information becomes available.
Have a good weekend,
Scott F. Torre
