NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence High School cafeteria looked quite a bit like an Austrian cafe late Saturday afternoon as the cast of “The Sound of Music” hosted over 200 residents to their Salzburg Festival ahead of their opening night performance this Friday evening.

Maria and Captain Von Trapp (Lara Gavagan and John Ertmann) signed autographs and posed for pictures, Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa and the rest of the Von Trapp children were on hand to join in the fun. The cast served a sit-down dinner to all their guests in full costume. There were also karaoke performances, a ‘Sound of Music’ themed Jeopardy game and the troupe performed songs from the play.

Craig Duke, the NPHS drama teacher and director/producer of the play, attended with his family, as did Leslie Ditta, the choreographer.  “It always starts coming together at this point, as soon as the costumes come on,” said Ditta, “This is always exciting to do.” It was a family event with young and old taking part in the sing-a-longs, games and crafts.
