NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – After much anticipation, the New Providence black bear was finally tranquilized
around 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 23, 2011.

Officer Theresa Gazaway of the New Providence Police Department reported that “the bear was safely tranquilized by the NJDEP Department of Fish and Wildlife.” The New Providence Fire Department, Police Department, and a Union County Sheriff Officer were of assistance at the scene.

A New Providence Fire Department cherry picker was used when the bear began crawling back up the tree to an unsafe distance for tranquilization.

According to the NJDEP Department of Fish and Wildlife, the bear will be “relocated to the nearest natural wildlife that would serve as a good habitat for its needs.” This location has been identified as the western portion of Morris County.
