New Providence Recreation invites the community to an open house to unveil “FACES: Celebrating the Global Heritage of Our Local Community” on Friday, May 10 from 4:30-7:00PM at the New Providence Municipal Center, 360 Elkwood Avenue, in the hallway outside the Recreation Department. The reception will feature comments from the artist at 5:15PM. Light refreshments will be served.
“FACES” is a large photograph consisting of twenty-four New Providence children’s faces in a grid-like arrangement with colorful backgrounds. The idea for “FACES” came to Marjan Nirou Saniee, local artist and Recreation Department instructor, while teaching one of her after school classes. “I observed the wonderful faces of the children in my painting class – faces from every corner of the world – and wondered how to celebrate and preserve what I was looking at.”
Nirou Saniee collaborated with master portrait photographer Judi Benvenuti, lighting expert Dennis Dempsey and, for technical support, graphic artist Tom Winnicki. The 4’ x 6’ photograph will be on permanent display on the hallway wall outside the Recreation office.
In addition to support from Recreation, “FACES” is made possible in part by a HEART (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) Grant from the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The HEART grant is administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
