Wharton Music Center (WMC) announces today that it will be named the Performing Arts School of the Wharton Institute of the Performing Arts (WIPA) effective immediately. The name change is part of a re-branding inititative to better align the organization’s name with its mission as a community music school and a renowned youth orchestra program. The three primary program areas: New Jersey Youth Symphony, Paterson Music Project and the Performing Arts School (formerly Wharton Music Center) are now encompassed within the Wharton Institute moniker.
Karen Deschere, Executive Director, states, “It is our hope that the word Institute serves as inspiration for our students and faculty as to who we are and what we can be educationally, and that the inclusion of the words Performing Arts embraces our dance, theatre and music theatre programs as well as our extraordinary music instruction. We are delighted to retain the name Wharton, in honor of Judith G. Wharton, whose dedication to providing musical excellence in a joyful spirit continues to drive all that we do.”
Wharton Music Center’s name change is far reaching, and will be phased in across all aspects of the organization over the next few months. Wharton’s Trustees, staff, faculty members, students, parents, donors, and community members are optimistic about the change as it reflects the significant growth of WMC and the New Jersey Youth Symphony in recent years and also indicates a strategy for continued progress in the coming years as a leader in outstanding educational experiences for all.

Wharton is New Jersey’s largest independent non-profit community performing arts center serving over 1,400 students through a range of classes and ensembles including the 14 ensembles of the New Jersey Youth Symphony which serves 500 students in grades 3 - 12. The Paterson Music Project is Wharton’s El Sistema-inspired program held at the Community Charter School of Paterson and Paterson Public School 1/26. Students receive 6 hours of intensive music instruction each week with the goal of creating social change through the ambitious pursuit of musical excellence.
