Erickson Living community offers safety, amenities during pandemic

Susan Gruen and her husband, Tom McArdle, moved to Lantern Hill, an Erickson Living senior living community in New Providence, NJ, two years ago. Amid a global pandemic, they are more satisfied with their decision than ever.

During the pandemic, Lantern Hill’s dedicated culinary team has delivered daily meals and snacks to each resident. When Lantern Hill’s on-site dining venues reopen, residents will have easy access to a variety of cuisine with enhanced safety protocols in place.

Prior to moving to Lantern Hill, Susan and Tom lived in a townhouse just a few miles away. If they had still been living there when the pandemic hit, they would have had to risk exposure to the virus to go grocery shopping, or rely on their adult children to help them with essential errands.

Staying connected while socially distant

Everyone has been coming up with innovative ways to stay connected while being physically apart to help curb the spread of the virus, and the residents at Lantern Hill are no different.

Susan points to the Neighbor to Neighbor program, in which residents volunteer to get a list of other residents to call at least on a weekly basis. They check in on each other, and it gives everyone the opportunity to chat and remember they’re not alone during this difficult time.

It’s these little extra touches that Susan says make Lantern Hill such a great place to call home, especially during uncertain times.

“I’ve always said, ‘It’s like a cruise ship that doesn’t go anywhere,’” says Susan of life at Lantern Hill. “And even now, during the pandemic, it couldn’t be easier to live here, and life couldn’t be more enjoyable.”

Indeed, a number of amenities on campus are once again open for residents to enjoy, including the all season pool, community garden, bocce courts, putting green, woodshop, and café for carryout food. Residents can also make an appointment at the salon, which is open with limited capacity, as well access rehabilitation services by appointment.

“As we continue to adapt to the pandemic, residents are pleased that they still have access to so many of the amenities that make Lantern Hill the dynamic community that it is,” says Dan Millender, sales director at Lantern Hill. “Virtual exercise classes, spiritual services, educational courses, technology support and creative social distancing events like balcony happy hours have all been invaluable in keeping residents engaged and active while staying safe.”

Safe and informed

During this unprecedented time, residents are reassured by the measures the community has taken to ensure their safety.

As part of the Erickson Living network of 20 managed communities across the nation, Lantern Hill has the support, resources, and financial strength to secure all the essentials and weather even the toughest challenge.

Residents have peace of mind that precautions are in place to protect their health, including screening of all visitors, disinfecting high-touch areas, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing. The community also has an on-site medical center.

When it comes to staying on top of the latest developments related to COVID-19, Lantern Hill provides comprehensive communication to residents, staff, family members, and visitors through prerecorded phone messages, hand-delivered letters, and programming on Lantern Hill’s in-house TV channel.

Beverly Kaye moved to Lantern Hill on January 31, and she, too, is thankful for the security and sense of community it provides.

“They’ve kept us in touch with what was going on, and the residents did the things needed to keep everyone safe,” says Beverly.
