ATLANTIC CITY – The New Providence wrestling season came to an end this past weekend at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Tyler Gazaway and Dan Kourakos finished as one of the Top 24 wrestlers in their weight class on Saturday in the NJSIAA Wrestling State Championships.
Gazaway finished the weekend 1-2 in the 138-pound class, losing his first match on Friday night in the tournament’s second round. He followed his loss with a victory in the first wrestleback round over South Plainfield’s Daniel Hedden, before losing his second consolation match.
The 160-pound Kourakos defeated Antrez Clagon in the preliminary round on Friday, before losing to Brick Township’s Willie Scott. Kourakos then fell by an 8-6 decision in his first wrestleback match.
The Pioneers were 11-8 this year and had four wrestlers qualify for the Region 3 tournament: Gazaway, Kourakos, sophomore Connor Morang and senior Carmine Boccellari.
Head coach Gary Bremer said these four wrestlers define the program.
“They relate greatly to the success,” he said. “Dan and Carmine were great senior leaders. They kind of showed the way. Tyler stepped up and did a wonderful job for us. Connor is on there. We have a lot of kids that are right on the cusp. I had a blast this year.”
