UNION, NJ - New Providence senior Owen Smith won the Union County title in the 160 lb. weight class on Saturday at Union High School. Smith defeated Westfield's Isaiah Reese in a 3-0 decision to capture his first county title. Junior Joey Delia placed fourth in the 182 lb. weight class.
Smith recorded two pins to reach the finals. First he took down Zach Fleischmann of Scotch Plains in the quarterfinals and then Kyle Roper of Cranford in the semifinal round.
Delia lost a tough 4-3 decision to Emilio Cordova of Rahway in the semifinals. In the consolation match, he beat Alex Osislo of Scotch Plains before losing to Devin Hilburn from Roselle Park in the third place match.
With a very young and inexperienced team this year, New Providence only entered six wrestlers (out of 14 weight classes) into the Union County tournament. Notwithstanding their small numbers, the New Providence wrestlers worked hard to tie for 11th in the 14 team tournament.
Up next for the team, New Providence will travel to Bridgewater-Raritan High School on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and will host Linden on Friday, Jan. 19 with a 6 p.m. start.
